Swiss Steel Group Enhances Spring Wire Efficiency

Swiss Steel Group, one of the world’s leading providers of customized solutions in the field of special steel long products, along with its subsidiary Ugitech (F), plays an important role in the demanding and constantly evolving market for drawn wire for spring applications. The continuously increasing demand for new technical solutions in the field of drawn wire for spring applications has provided significant impetus for decisive innovations. Markets such as aviation, medicine, the automotive industry, connection technology, the power plant, and the cosmetics industry demand products of the highest quality, purity, and precision. Playing a pioneering role in meeting these requirements is part of the Group’s philosophy.

Integration is the magic word for technical progress.

Vertical integration: The Group takes a 100 percent integrated approach to these sophisticated precision products, from processing the material in the steelworks in Ugine to forming the wire into a spring in two specialized wire drawing plants in Imphy (F) and San Vendemiano (IT). This guarantees complete control of production, from the raw material to the final drawing of the wire.

High-quality research and development expertise: Technical customer support at the Group’s stainless research center in Ugine plays a crucial role. It is at the heart of the design and development of customized products. Technical support ensures that the products meet the specific applications of customers and the special requirements of many markets. A significant investment in research into the surface finish of drawn wires—a crucial parameter for the high-speed configuration of springs—is just one of many examples.

Product innovations: Technical advances in the stainless and alloy spring market offered by the Group include remelted round and shaped wire with diameters ranging from 0.18 mm to 20 mm. The grades UGIPURE 4568 and UGIPURE 4462 are solutions with clearly improved inclusion purity for heavy spring applications.

Another innovative product variant is the drawing of the duplex grade UGIS4462, which has been upgraded to the high-speed steel properties of the ISO 6931-1 standard. It represents an optimum compromise between high mechanical properties, corrosion resistance, and stable material costs. In addition to high quality assurance, these factors ensure more efficient and optimized production of spring applications. All of these applications are already available in Green Steel quality.

These and other interesting technical topics will be addressed at the ‘Tech Talks’ on March 20-21, 2024, in San Vendemiano, Veneto, Italy.
