ZOLLERN Investment Casting Process for Aerospace Topology Optimization

Leading supplier in the metal processing industry, ZOLLERN Group’s Investment Casting SOPHIA® process gives design engineers a great deal of freedom when it comes to optimizing topology for aerospace. The process was developed to manufacture complex aluminium investment castings with highly sophisticated wall thicknesses and a uniform/dense microstructure. This allows better static properties and dynamic characteristic values to be achieved.

Post casting, the mould is lowered to a cooling medium by a computer-controlled process. The parameters are matched with the component’s geometry and lead to a controlled and quicker solidification. This produces a finer and denser microstructure. The SOPHIA® process method decreases reliance on wall thickness’s strength values while dramatically improving mechanical properties. The special investment casting process offers design engineers an enormous advantage compared to conventionally produced milled parts.

The company started its investment casting activities more than six decades ago. Investment casting is a precision casting method which for economic reasons is becoming increasingly relevant internationally. The process is being used to produce larger and larger castings. Investment castings are also being used in increasingly complex smelting processes for so-called super alloys.
