  • The R2 robot provides contactless delivery for groceries, medicine, and retail goods to reduce contagion.
  • A Steer study predicts 3.4 million new jobs in the autonomous delivery sector between 2025 and 2035.

R2 developed by Nuro is the second autonomous vehicle to receive a driverless testing permit in California. This self-driving delivery robot was the first autonomous vehicle to get an approved exemption from the US Department of Transportation.

During the pandemic, the company sets up contactless delivery services with R2 at temporary care facilities in California to carry food, water, and medical supplies to patients and doctors with the goal of decreasing points of contagion. For some time now, R2 has been testing on city streets fully autonomously in three different states; No drivers. No occupants. No chase cars.

R2 was built to autonomously deliver a wide range of goods like prepared food, groceries, medicine, and retail products, so that consumers and communities could have more time, more access, safer roads, and reduced emissions. Retail partners, government policy makers, law enforcement, and community groups will be necessary to develop public trust in an entirely new way of delivering local goods.

Furthermore, a recent study by transportation specialists at Steer found that, from 2025-2035, 3.4 million jobs will be created in this new sector, making it a work force demanding industry.
