Automotive solution provider MAHLE, presented a new type of condenser for hybrid and electric vehicles. It assists with faster traction battery charging and offers a significantly higher power density than the current one. The condenser provides for optimum cooling of battery ensuring protection against damage. The cabin too is cooled without the need for extra installation space. The production process of the equipment is also optimized to provide a lighter product that is less vulnerable to corrosion and requires less refrigerant.
The complex thermal management of electrified vehicles includes stronger interactions between cabin and powertrain thermal management. In addition, the need to maintain components (battery) within tightly defined temperature limits.
Fast charging being a key factor and thermal management requirements are met by numerous company innovations. Enabling success of new forms of mobility and making this form of transport more suitable for everyday use. Its components can be found in hybrid, battery electric, and fuel cell powered vehicles.
Finding a balance between performance, installation space requirements, comfort, and systems costs is vital. Meeting these challenges by a design holistic approach and optimizing the interactions of each component. It is thus able to increase battery life and cruising range. With passenger comfort and performance of the drive system, thereby significantly contributing to the increased acceptance of alternative drives.
"Battery cooling is crucial for the performance of electric vehicles. In developing our new condenser, we were able to draw on our many years of expertise in thermal management,” asserted Laurent Art, Director Advanced Engineering Thermal Management, MAHLE. “We’re confident that this condenser will give a further boost to the development of electric vehicles.”
