NORD Drive Solutions for Primary Packaging

By MWM Desk3 min read

Editorial Highlights

  • NORD Drivesystems introduces NXD tupH, an aluminum surface treatment offering stainless steel-level hygiene for primary packaging.
  • The high-performance, non-porous sealer resists aggressive cleaning chemicals and prevents flaking during intensive wash-down cycles.
  • Compact aluminum designs offer superior thermal conductivity and space-saving scalability compared to traditional stainless steel units.

Comparable to stainless steel in terms of hygiene and corrosion resistance, yet more efficient in terms of space requirements and scalability, the NXD tupH® surface treatment from NORD Drivesystems opens up new possibilities for primary packaging applications. Aluminum-based drive solutions are more compact and offer thermal advantages while NXD tupH® ensures effective protection against moisture and aggressive cleaning chemicals during intensive cleaning cycles.

With NXD tupH®, NORD Drivesystems enables the use of drive technology with aluminum housings in wet product-contact areas. The combination of the surface treatment and a high-performance sealer creates a particularly hard, non-porous surface that can be cleaned quickly and hygienically. Even after numerous cleaning cycles, the sealer does not flake off and, therefore, cannot contaminate packaged products. Thanks to the surface treatment, the protective effect remains unchanged even in the event of minor damage. Long-term testing using Ecolab cleaning agents has proven its resistance to aggressive cleaning chemicals. Crucially for use in wet product-contact areas in primary packaging, NORD drive components with NXD tupH® surfaces comply with the requirements of the FDA, the EU, Switzerland, and the MERCOSUR states.

More Compact and More Scalable
With NXD tupH®, NORD enhances the hygienically designed drive components within its wash-down modular product system, offering additional process advantages for applications such as primary packaging. For example, drive solutions with aluminum housings can be designed more compactly than their stainless steel counterparts, as aluminum is lighter and offers significantly higher thermal conductivity. The modular product system also enables drives to be configured precisely to machine requirements. Together, these advantages reduce space requirements and support flexible system scalability.

Decentralized and Suitable for Servo Applications

With the NXD tupH®-compatible NORDAC ON PURE, the solution provider is set to extend the benefits of decentralized drive electronics to wash-down environments. Ethernet on Board, hybrid cables, and daisy-chain technology enable efficient and hygienic system topologies. This makes the inverter easier to clean and significantly more streamlined than conventional decentralized wiring solutions. In addition, its integrated POSICON software enables the creation of motion profiles for non-complex servo applications in packaging. These include functions such as synchronization and flying saw operations, which are used, for example, in separating and sealing processes during flow wrapping.

Economical Alternative to Servo Gear Units

Where servo gear units are oversized for applications in primary packaging lines, NORD offers helical, helical bevel, and worm gear units as a cost-effective alternative. Through IEC, NEMA, and servo adapters available within the NORD modular product system, these gear units can be combined with servo motors from a wide range of manufacturers. Here too, NXD tupH® ensures long-lasting durability and resistance to demanding wash-down conditions.
